History Trail
This week, our 4th Class Boys visited the Bishop’s Palace museum as part of their history curriculum! They had been learning about the great Waterford patriot and American Civil War hero Thomas Francis Meagher in class. In the Bishops’s Palace they would see Meagher’s portrait , uniform and swords. On the Mall they saw where our national flag was flown for the very first time! Did you know that Meagher was captured by the British Redcoats in 1848 in the building now occupied by Sabai restaurant! We saw the Meagher statue, Reginald’s Tower, the Viking Longboat, Greyfriars Abbey, St Martin’s Gate, The French Tower and the Bishop’s Palace ! Our city is simply teeming with history. From Ragnall the Viking to Strongbow, from Thomas Francis Meagher to the Jail Wall Disaster to the Irish War of Independence, we have a history like no other place on this island. Let’s get out there and learn!
