This week, we are celebrating Engineers week. As part of the celebration, 5th & 6th Class got the opportunity to visit the Waterford Institute of Technology.
Room 22 attended a workshop on ‘Structures’. The boys were given a lecture on materials and forces and they spoke about different types of structures and how they stay up. In pairs, they were given a challenge to design and build a bridge using simple materials and also had to build a free standing structure. It was so important to think like engineers during the woile process and take into consideration the materials that were given, the strength of these materials and the forces that act on them. It was impressive to see how the boys could ‘think outside the box’ and came up with some excellent designs.
Room 23 took part in a workshop on Magnets and Electric Motors. Each pupil got to build an electric motor using a battery, pins, magnets, foam roll and wire coil. It was a very interesting, hands on experience. The boys even got to take their motors home.
Room 14 experienced real college life and attended a lecture in the Auditorium about Buildings and Structures. They examined materials used in buildings and bridges and how they are used to greatest effect. Take a look at all our photos below and see how much fun was had by all.
Well done boys – we definitely have some future engineers in Mount Sion! A big thanks to Calmast at the Waterford Institute of Technology for organising the events.
