As part of our History School of Excellence Project, our class investigated the life of Richard “Dick” Mulcahy, fighter in 1916 Rising, second in command to Michael Collins and then leader of the Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence, Head of the Free State Forces during the Irish Civil War, Minister for Education and leader of Fine Gael! Hugh, a boy in our class had discovered Mulcahy on the Waterford Civiv Trust Blue Plaque Trail while doing a school project. We found out he was a Mount Sion boy and we wondered why we hadn’t heard of him before. We went on a journey of discovery which revealed so, so much about Waterford’s Forgotten Rebel, the Taoiseach that never was, Richard Mulcahy!
