Mrs. Barry’s 5th Class and Ms. Coffey’s 1st Class are taking part in buddy reading. Every Wednesday, the boys from Room 22 go to Room 8 for this exciting activity. Each pair completed a “Reading Buddy Profile” together to help them get to know each other. Each Junior Buddy reads a book to their Senior Buddy. The Senior Buddy listens carefully and gives help when needed. They then chat about the book and the older boys ask questions about the story. The Senior Buddy then reads to his Junior Buddy to model good reading skills.
You can see from the quotes below how much the fifth class boys enjoy and value buddy reading:
- “It improves the younger boys reading” (Dylan Brown)
- “We can all make new friends and the younger boys know we are there to look out for them” (Jordan Murphy Jacob)
- “It feels good helping the boys to learn” (Evan Sinnott)
- “We get to turn into junior teachers and it’s so much fun” (Timi Adeniji)
- “It shows the younger boys what to aim for and what they will be able to read when they get to 5th Class if they work hard” (Ben Purcell)
The Buddy Reading Scheme does wonders for the children’s self confidence and develops fluency, comprehension and a love of reading all while having fun.
