Today Friday 13th June proved lucky as regards the weather but unlucky with the result of the Br. Dowling Cup Final. Our school proudly hosted the Br. Dowling Cup Tournament today. Br. Dowling was the last Christian Brother to be Principal of Mount Sion. When he passed away in 2006 his family donated a magnificent cup to the school. To honour his memory and his contribution to Gaelic Games and their promotion in Mount Sion we now invite Edmund Rice schools in the South East of Ireland to take part in this annual event. Today Bunscoil McAuley Rís Callan, Carrick CBS, CBS Wexford and Mount Sion played some wonderful hurling on a beautiful summer’s day.
Mount Sion and Carrick qualified for the Br. Dowling Cup final. Carrick got off to a great start with an early goal and unfortunately our boys never quite got to grips with that early goal. We were so proud of the boys though as they showed tremendous spirit and fought with pride until the final whistle. As the reigning champions we handed over the Cup to the better team on the day, Carrick won on a scoreline of 3-4 to 0-4.
For the final our supporters, the boys from Ms. Barry’s 4th Class, Mr. Fanning’s 4th Class, Ms. Whelan’s 5th Class, Mr. O’Brien’s 6th Class and Mr. Wall’s 6th Class, were amazing. They chanted and sang and cheered on their classmates with great energy. As supporters they showed great pride in their school.
So a great day in glorious sunshine saw the end of CHAMPS Week for another year. Well done to our team of Conor Freeman, Daniel Murphy, Niall Geraghty, Richard Hearne Kiely, Jack Byrne, Peter Nolan, Ben Ryan, Raymond Iwheta, Timi Sobowale, Rahman Kareem, David Adebayo, PJ Fanning, Darragh McGrath, Aaron Murphy, Samuel Mathé, Oghosa Osariehme, Kieran Hanrahan, Pierce O’Sullivan, Robert Murphy and Dilon Walsh.
